Biomass Energy Project
A critical problem facing Haiti on an environmental, economic, and political level is deforestation. Haiti was once covered with rain forests, but its natural supply of forests have been depleted at an accelerating rate.
Haiti's growing population has created greater demand for charcoal, Haiti's principal cooking fuel. That charcoal is made from wood harvested from Haiti's forests. Fortunately, there are more efficient ways to produce charcoal, and a small amount of technology and training can revolutionize the process of charcoal production. Trees and grasses can be grown on currently unused land, and that plant biomass can produce a steady, reliable, and efficient supply of cooking charcoal.
